Theresa Onuorah, born on January 9, 1942, in Unubi, Anambra State, Nigeria, is a celebrated Nigerian musician and dancer renowned for her significant contributions to Igbo cultural music, particularly through the Egedege dance.
Hailing from a musical family, Theresa’s father was a prominent ‘Egwu Ekpili’ musician, which greatly influenced her passion for music. By her teenage years, she was performing at local events, and by the age of 20, she had established herself as a notable performer.
In 1985, Theresa founded the Egedege Dance Troupe, a name symbolizing ‘prosperity and courage.’ Under her leadership, the troupe became synonymous with Igbo traditional dance, blending traditional instruments like the udu and ekwe with distinctive drumming, call-and-response vocals, and captivating storytelling.
