Durk Derrick Banks, known professionally as Lil Durk, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. Born on October 19, 1992, he emerged as a leading figure in the drill music scene and is the founder of the collective and record label Only the Family (OTF).
Growing up in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, Lil Durk faced numerous challenges, including legal issues and personal losses. Despite these obstacles, he turned to music as an outlet and began self-releasing mixtapes in 2011. His early work, particularly the Signed to the Streets series (2013–2014), garnered a local following and led to a deal with Def Jam Recordings
Lil Durk’s debut studio album, Remember My Name (2015), peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 200. He continued to build momentum with subsequent releases, including Lil Durk 2X (2016). In 2020, his collaboration with Drake on “Laugh Now Cry Later” debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, significantly boosting his mainstream recognition. His eighth studio album, Almost Healed (2023), features the hit single “All My Life” with J. Cole. Beyond his music career, Lil Durk is engaged to India Royale and is a father of seven. He has faced personal tragedies, including the deaths of close associates like King Von and his brother, OTF Dthang.
